Song Analysis

I analyzed "On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons. After listening to the song with poetic devices in mind, I noticed the point of view of the song as a whole. It's in first person, but that first person helps to get the message of the song across. In the song, "I", who could be anybody, works his way to the top of the world. He/She "pays his dues to the dirt," and has "been waiting for a whiile now."By making it first person, it personalizes the story, which I go more in depth about in the next paragraph.
I never understood how open this song was to interpretation before. Now, I realize that "On Top of the World" could be anything. It could be getting straight A's or being the best athelete in your respective sport. That is left to the listener to decide. By making the song personal to the listener, Inagine Dragons makes the song much more enjoyable. These discoveries of the song on a deeper level make this song just that much better.

  1. Nice interpretation of this song (which i love by the way). I think the way you described what "on top of the world" could be was true and makes the song more interesting.
